An audience is a group of people who assemble to participate in a public performance, encounter a work of art, or receive a message across various media platforms. Derived from the Latin word meaning “to hear,” the term spans traditional live spectators, readers of literature, listeners of music, and modern digital consumers. In any form of communication—be it public speaking, business marketing, or creative writing—understanding and connecting with the audience dictates the ultimate success of the message. Categories of Audiences

Communicators typically navigate three structural layers of an audience when sending a message:

Primary Audience: The direct, intended target group whose needs, values, and actions the communicator explicitly wants to address.

Secondary Audience: People who are not the direct target but can reasonably be expected to encounter the message, such as a supervisor CC’d on a client email.

Hidden Audience: Unintended recipients who may later interact with the message through forwarding, leaks, or public archiving. Public Speaking Profiles

In live or presentation environments, a public speaker generally faces four behavioral types of audiences: What I Talk About When I Talk About Audience Interaction
